What is Ember?
Run by Chef Craig Ian McApine and located on Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Ember is an intimate space of 36 covers with a large open kitchen at the back where guests can see chefs in action. Craig has created a menu that pays homage to the finest seasonal produce, sourced from carefully selected suppliers, letting bold flavours take centre stage with a Mediterranean influence.
Tell us about the menu
Split into Earth, Land and Sea, the menu makes full use of the ember grill that inspires many of Craig’s dishes, from the ember-baked celeriac hummus, olive oil, hazelnuts and kale and smoked sweet potato, garlic, verbena harissa to whisky-cured hot-smoked salmon, celeriac and green apple remoulade and grilled slow-cooked pork belly, smoked aubergine and beetroot purée.
Gluten-free himself, Craig has created many dishes without gluten - even the current favourite from the menu, crispy buttermilk chicken, hand cut slaw and chipotle aioli.
Brunch sees a mixture of savoury and sweet dishes. Classics such as Eggs Benedict; Pea, rocket and new potato frittata; French toast with maple syrup and bacon feature alongside dishes that have been given an Ember twist like the Scottish peat-smoked smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.
What about the drinks?
The drinks list has been curated by Craig himself who celebrates his Scottish and South African roots with a fine selection of single malt whiskies and hand-picked South African wines.
Craig, where do we recognise the Chef from?
Craig was on of Channel 4’s show, Come Dine with Me in 2005, where his win led to a career change as a private chef. Following more recent posts as head chef at The Yacht restaurant and the consultant executive chef at Hotel Indigo, Craig is now set on bringing Ember to life.
