Editor's Pick: March 2020

Every month I pick my favourite events, restaurant openings and products from across the UK. I want you to enjoy food and drink, events and exciting pop-ups from all across the country. We're all foodies regardless of postcode! This month includes Glasgow Vegan Food Festival, grabbing your bib in Lyme Regis, coffee straight to your door and some excellent pop-ups in the north and south.

The Bridge of Orchy’s new Afternoon Tea includes a glass of Prosecco, a selection of sandwiches, freshly baked scones, French macarons, billionaire’s shortbread and lemon meringue tart, as well as Gin & beetroot cured seatrout and cucumber pickle, and chef’s renowned haggis & black pudding scotch eggs. GRAB A BIB AT HIX OYSTER & FISH HOUSE - 23 MARCH

LYME REGIS


Mark Hix and the team at HIX Oyster & Fish House kick off their new series of events this spring. First up is Buckets and Bibs taking place on 23rd March at 7pm. Mark Hix MBE teams up once more with Nigel Bloxham of Weymouth’s Crab House Café for the first event of the year.


Guests will sit at long dining tables to enjoy their sharing-style feast of local mackerel and Dorset cock crab. Much like the famous Food Rocks supper club, after enjoying crab soup, Cobb-smoked mackerel pate with pickled seaweed and Lyme Bay mackerel ceviche, guests will don their bibs, grab a rock and begin to smash into their tasty crab, which is served simply with mayonnaise and freshly baked bread. Mark and Nigel will be on hand to assist and answer any questions throughout the evening with a Q&A held during the evening.

EAT THERMIDOR CROQUETTES AT POMELO

The highly acclaimed modern British restaurant Lupins, owned by top chefs Natasha Cooke and Lucy Pedder, is to open sister site Pomelo in Goods Way, King’s Cross this March.


The new eatery, serving unique modern British tapas, will form part of all day dining venue The Courtyard in Goods Way, also home to new live music venue Lafayette, by Mumford & Sons star Ben Lovett.


Pop in and try the crab thermidor croquettes – a take on Lupins’ two signature dishes, cavelo nero croquettes and Cornish crab thermidor and their hugely popular cornmeal spring onions with chipotle mayonnaise.

Glasgow Vegan Festival provides an all-immersive vegan experience for everyone, whether you’re vegan-curious, veggie, vegan or just love to try new food. The boys kick off their debut supper club at R Noone and Son in Stockport this month. Chefs Jason McCrellis and Michael Wilkinson host an evening which will include a welcome cocktail, a three-course meal and wine. This is your chance to try high-end cooking without the price tag. Cardiff welcomes a new bar, specialising in the sale of Spanish sherry, wines from Montilla-Moriles and vermouth.


Modelled on the small, casual late-night venues found in cities like Madrid, the cosy bar - named Vermut - holds a maximum of 30 covers, with punters encouraged to pop in, perch on bar stools and enjoy a relaxing drink and a chat.


Don't worry, they have something to line your tummy. A limited menu of ‘para picar’ (things to pick at) have been specifically designed to complement the drinks list, along with a range of sharing platters of cured meats, charcuterie and Spanish cheeses.
