Big foodie news coming out of East Sussex: two-Michelin-starred chef Rafael Cagali is heading to the coast!

This September, he and partner Charlie Lee will open Marea, a brand-new restaurant in Hove that promises elevated dining in a relaxed, welcoming setting.
Marea – meaning tide in Italian – is inspired by the natural rhythms of the seasons, a concept that feels beautifully suited to its seaside location. The menu will flow from small bites through to refined plates, sharers, and indulgent desserts, all designed around what’s best and freshest in the moment. T
Taking the helm in the kitchen is Head Chef Ewan Waller, a protégé of Cagali, bringing his own creative energy to the daily menu.
“Marea is a concept that truly excites me,” says Cagali. “It’s about exceptional food in a setting that feels like home. We want guests to feel relaxed while exploring something new – and Brighton & Hove has the perfect audience for that.”
If you're familiar with Cagali’s work at Da Terra or the more laid-back Elis at Bethnal Green Town Hall, you’ll recognise Marea’s positioning: sitting somewhere beautifully in-between. Expect premium ingredients, inventive technique, and a warm neighbourhood vibe – all served up in an intimate space seating just 38 guests, including at a central bar counter that’s sure to become a hot ticket.
The front-of-house will be led with the same care, courtesy of co-owner Charlie Lee, whose passion for hospitality promises a team that’s polished but friendly, and always focused on making guests feel at home.
With a culinary background that spans Italy, Brazil and some of the world’s most exciting kitchens, Cagali is set to bring something truly special to the Sussex coast – and we can’t wait to pull up a seat.
