On 10th September 2025, celebrated chef Rafael Cagali (of two-Michelin-starred Da Terra fame) and partner Charlie Lee will open their newest venture, Marea by Rafael Cagali, on Hove’s Church Road.

Taking its name from the Italian word for “tide,” Marea will reflect the rhythm of the seasons and celebrate the best of Sussex and British produce. Working alongside his protégé and newly appointed Head Chef Ewan Waller, Cagali has designed a menu that strikes a balance between the refined precision of Da Terra and the approachable warmth of its sister restaurant, Elis.

The à la carte menu is generous yet refined, beginning with small bites and moving through hot and cold plates, mains, and desserts. Dishes are rooted in Cagali’s Brazilian-Italian heritage while showcasing local suppliers. Highlights include:

  • Fried oyster with hot sauce emulsion

  • Lobster claw tartlet with ginger and N25 caviar

  • Pumpkin ravioli with courgette and jalapeño

  • Langoustine with beans and moqueca stew

  • Lobster rice with dende emulsion

  • Baba au Cachaça with Chantilly cream

Guests can also opt for the ‘Chef’s Selection’ tasting menu, a curated journey of signature flavours.

The Drinks

Marea’s wine list is designed to be inventive and balanced, featuring Old World classics, New World discoveries, and a strong focus on terroir. English sparkling and still wines from Rathfinny, Hundred Hills, and Langham will sit proudly alongside natural and sustainable bottles. The bar will also serve a creative cocktail programme to complement the menu.

The Space

The 38-cover dining room blends soft, muted interiors and wooden tones with vibrant Brazilian artwork. A central bar, lined with leather stools and glowing under low-hanging lights, welcomes guests for everything from a quick bite to a whole evening of dining.

Chef Cagali says: “Marea is about bringing the highest quality ingredients and innovative techniques into a convivial, welcoming space. Brighton and Hove already has such a strong independent food culture, and I want Marea to become one of the most respected and beloved restaurants in the region.”

Marea by Rafael Cagali opens 10th September 2025, Church Road, Hove.
