Review: Heinz Plant Powered

You may think that for vegans, soup would be the easiest thing to find. Well, you’d be wrong - unless you want something that’s a green-feast, often producers slip some cream in here or a little bit of meat in there.

While I often make my own, sometimes there isn’t the time so it’s good to have a can or two sitting in the cupboard. Luckily for those who follow a plant-based diet, Heinz have launched a range of three new plant-powered soups: Mediterranean Tomato & Bean, Coconut Curry & Jackfruit, and Moroccan Chickpea & Bell Pepper. Each one is packed full of flavour, deliciously warming and perfect as we head into winter. The texture is slightly thicker than you might be used to from their classic tomato, but with a bit of bread dunked in, it’s still a tasty thing to tuck into.

My favourite of the three was the Coconut Curry & Jackfruit – the curry spices give it a wonderful warming background note, and the combination of haricot beans, chickpeas and jackfruit make it almost taste like you were eating a curry rather than a soup. What’s more, each tin of soup helps with getting in the protein too – something a recent Twitter poll from Heinz found 68% of consumers said they struggle with. Each tin has 14-15 grams of protein, as well as fibre and two of your five a day.

As well as the tasty plant-based soups, Heinz has also launched new and tasty Veg Hoops. Made using a special recipe, Heinz have combined pasta with cauliflower in a smooth tomato and sweet potato sauce to boost veg content by a whopping 30%.

Mediterranean Tomato & Bean and Moroccan Chickpea & Bell Pepper are available in supermarkets nationwide, RRP £1.50 for 400g. Coconut Curry & Jackfruit, is launching early 2022. The Heinz Veg Hoops are available nationwide from £1.25 for 400g and £0.90 for 205g.
